Décor editor Andrew Mackenzie gives a tired patio a seasonal update for winter

Leading onto the garden and swimming pool, and with the added advantage of having a build-in fireplace, this area was begging to be turned into a warm, comfortable outdoor living room. In keeping with the ochre wall colour, I decided on a neutral colour palette accented by fresh whites, and chose to create a safari feel, which is fun and contemporary. The only existing furniture was an old leather sofa and a raw wood coffee table. To add extra seating, without obstructing the view of the garden, I selected two low, white, plaited leather ottomans and pair of turned wooden stools, which can double up as side tables.

African union – December 2009

For the festive table, décor editor Andrew Mackenzie was inspired by the Union Jack, which was one of the hot rends at this year’s Maison & Objet show in Paris. The combination of ethnic beadwork and the Union Jack creates a uniquely South African Look.
