A breath of fresh air – January 2009

Need to revamp that much used outdoor patio, but don’t have time? Try these stylish fast fixes from our décor editor Andrew Mackenzie

Existing outdoor sofas and chairs can be bought instantly to life by simply adding a few scatter cushions. The trick is not to be to skimpy, layering with two different styles, a plain and a pattern in contrasting matching colours, keeping the tones the same.

Add a kelim, picking up the colours and tones on your cushions, or try a simple sisal rug for a neutral and textured look.

A table is not just a practical object, but a canvas on which to get creative with some of your favourite finds. Pay attention to heights and contrasting shapes and textures, and pick up the colours your have selected in your scheme. If you have an outdoor plug point, another trick I love is to add a side lamp or two. This creates a wonderful ambience in the evenings and turns that outdoor space into a second sitting room. If not, candles, free-standing lanterns or hurricane lamps will do the trick.
